Jay Electronica Is Unbelievably Good

In Choice Cuts on March 12, 2010 at 7:59 pm

Jay Electronica, thanks to rockwellbeats.wordpress.com for the picture

I’ve been listening to Jay Electronica almost nonstop over the past few days. It’s pretty much everything I love about hip-hop. He’s been getting a lot of blog love lately and he’s playing lotsa shows from festivals such as Paid Dues and Bonnaroo to opening for Mos Def on a string of shows across Europe. Big things for this guy, for sure. He’s got a few releases, almost all unofficial and no full length yet but tons of tracks out there for your and my enjoyment. What turned me on to this guy originally was that he made an EP using music from Michel Gondry’s Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, which is one of my favorite films of all time. It turns out that that EP, called Act I: The Eternal Sunshine (The Pledge), is really really good, and it can be found here, thanks to Hip Hop Flavas Blog. My favorite stuff of his comes from his unofficial Style Wars EP which you can grab here, thanks to Hip Hop Is Life. If that’s not enough then there’s a 33 song mixtape made by DJay Tiger called The Jay Electronica Project that has some sick songs on it and can be found here thanks to ThatCrack.com (scroll down a little until you see “Download” on the right side then just follow the directions they give, it’s a bit of a process but trust me it’s well worth it). There’s yet another unofficial compilation of 22 of his tracks called What the Fuck Is a Jay Electronica, which can be found here, thanks to 2DopeBoyz. As for official releases, he’s got two singles “Exhibit A” and “Exhibit C” available for purchase on iTunes featured on his myspace (I’m really diggin the album artwork for those singles). I’m sure there’ll be more posts on him in the future, and in the mean time I highly recommend giving him a listen and if you like it keep an ear out for more tracks and a possibly a full length or an official release of some kind. Enjoy.
