New Grimes and Blue Hawaii!

Anyone who reads this blog will be aware that we are all massive fans of Montréal’s Claire Boucher, who goes by the stage name Grimes. Earlier in the year she released a tape on Arbutus Records called ‘Geidi Primes’ that has proved to be one of my most played albums of the year (check the review here), and, just a few months after that release, she’s back with four NINE (!) more songs on her myspace, all marked as ‘new/rough’.

After a few listens all I can say is that each song maintains the distinct ‘Grimes’ markers; evocative use of string samples; worldly vocal practices; percussive experimentation. However, Boucher’s use of catchy hooks has been replaced by a new synth-based drive that wasn’t present on ‘Geidi Primes’. Either way, great listening once again.

Also out on Arbutus now is Blue Hawaii’s album ‘Blooming Summer’. You can download it free here, and it is also available for purchase here. We’ll be sure to have a review up soon enough.
