Partying All Tomorrow With Neutral Milk Hotel

I looked through all of their songs in my Itunes and couldn’t come up with a better pun or poor clever turn of phrase for the title then the one I put up, so, live with it. If it’s any consolation, Jeff fucking Mangum is making the rare trek down from the cave which he likely inhabits up on a quiet mountain somewhere to grace us with a performance, both in my home, the lovely Garden State. The most noted hipster recluse since J.D. Salinger is performing at All Tomorrow’s Parties in Asbury Park on September 30, a festival curated by a specific band-in this case, the renowned trip hop group Portishead. He will also be playing a show shortly after, also in Asbury Park.

I can’t really offer much in the way of new insight about this dude. Neutral Milk Hotel’s In The Aeroplane Over the Sea is an essential album in the music buff’s canon, a rite of passage of sorts for many a high schooler. In the past decade or so, he’s essentially fallen off the map except for the occasional performance. Below is a video of them performing one of my favorite NMH tunes live back in the day. Pay careful attention to the trombone player’s beard-it’s almost as beautiful as the song.

I may just find myself leaving homely Maryland next school year and tripping back home to get to experience this for myself. Fingers crossed.
