Julian Lynch will help us welcome back the summer sun

Julian Lynch‘s music has genuinely brought me to the verge of tears. I mean, context, sure. But the point is his music is powerful and vital in a way one would generally attribute to something more “in-your-face,” though what it lacks in urgency it more than makes up for in feeling. Julian makes music that demonstrates a unique ear for a certain “sound collage” style of music that when done by others has an ugly habit of being unmemorable and passive. However, his songs are intricately and carefully arranged, without sacrificing any emotional resonance or melody. Considering this is music where the vocals are largely used as an instrument, I consider that not just an achievement but a feat worthy of adoration and admiration.

So when I read that Julian Lynch has a new album coming in Spring/Summer 2011, I can’t help but feel excited. Not so much in the way that one (as in, “I”) anticipate something like the new Radiohead album, but rather in the way you look forward to seeing a friend you haven’t seen in a while. The album’s titled Terra and that great picture above will grace its cover. It’s coming out on New Jersey’s Underwater Peoples Records, who I can’t say enough good things about. You can stream the achingly good previously released, Mare – as well as his other excellent releases (Orange You Glad is equally as impressive as just about anything else he’s put out) – check out Julian’s Space Mountain tumblr, and give a listen to (and download) a recent session he did for WFMU, which you can get from the always excellent Free Music Archive. Enjoy all these videos people made for his music.
