J-Dilla – 5 Years Gone

It was 5 years ago (well plus two days now I guess) that J-Dilla died. To be fair I had completely forgotten about him. Never being really into hip-hop at the time, he didn’t make much of an impression on me at first. I just got his last album Donuts (courtesy of engineofruin on tumblr), and apparently the fact that everyone was so impressed by it actually meant a lot.

Shortly after releasing Donuts, Dilla died of a blood disease, and it wasn’t really until after that that he was recognized  for his solo work, but his influence left a big gap in hip-hop, especially in Detroit. Having produced some of the big names in the early 2000s rap scene, its not exactly news that J-Dilla was a huge influence on the hip-hop community. What I never noticed before though (even while the rest of the internet did figure it out) was that he actually did some really cool and innovative things with his beats. Donuts is an instrumental album, perfect for displaying his talent and most of all his awesome creativity with no other distractions. Dilla seems ages before the rest with his wide-ranging choices of samples and beats. Every song on this album sounds carefully crafted.

If I had to pick a standout track it would be either Lightworks or Stop! but seriously, just listen to the whole thing straight through.
